India’s logistics sector is undergoing a transformative phase with the Strengthening Multimodal and Integrated Logistics Ecosystem (SMILE) Program, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This initiative is aimed at enhancing logistics efficiency, reducing costs, and developing multimodal infrastructure, thereby improving India’s global trade competitiveness. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, logistics reform has become a crucial component of India’s economic strategy, aligning with initiatives like the National Logistics Policy (NLP) and PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.

Key Objectives of the SMILE Program

The SMILE program focuses on four key pillars to revolutionize India’s logistics landscape:

  1. Strengthening Institutional Frameworks – Establishing governance structures at national, state, and city levels for integrated logistics planning.
  2. Standardizing Warehousing and Logistics Assets – Improving supply chain efficiency by ensuring uniformity in warehousing practices, thereby attracting private sector investment.
  3. Enhancing External Trade Logistics – Boosting India’s performance on the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) through digital trade facilitation.
  4. Adopting Smart and Green Logistics Solutions – Implementing low-emission logistics systems to support sustainable supply chain practices.

Impact on India’s Logistics Performance

Efficient logistics are critical to economic growth, and India has been making significant progress:

  • India’s rank in the World Bank Logistics Performance Index (LPI) improved from 54 in 2014 to 38 in 2023.
  • Logistics costs currently stand at 12-14% of GDP, compared to 8-9% in developed economies. The Modi government aims to bring this down to 8% by 2030, making Indian industries more competitive globally.
  • The implementation of NLP and Gati Shakti has reduced port dwell time from 100 hours to 48 hours, facilitating smoother trade logistics.

Aligning with Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India

By fostering an efficient logistics ecosystem, the SMILE program directly supports Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India by:

  • Strengthening domestic manufacturing – A streamlined supply chain reduces production bottlenecks, improving output efficiency.
  • Enhancing export competitiveness – Better logistics mean reduced lead times, improving India’s position in global trade.
  • Attracting private investment – Standardized logistics infrastructure encourages public-private partnerships (PPPs), leading to a more robust logistics network.

Digital Transformation in Trade Logistics

The Modi government has emphasized digitalization as a key enabler for logistics efficiency. The SMILE program promotes:

  • Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP) – Integrating all logistics-related digital services under a single framework.
  • E-Logistics Marketplaces – Facilitating real-time tracking of shipments, leading to 30% improvement in delivery efficiency.
  • Paperless Trade Facilitation – Enabling faster customs clearance and reducing administrative bottlenecks.

Gender Inclusion in Logistics

A significant and progressive aspect of the SMILE program is its commitment to gender inclusion. The initiative includes:

  • Gender audit of land ports to ensure women-friendly trade infrastructure.
  • Assessment of Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) to improve gender responsiveness.
  • Encouraging female participation in logistics workforce, aligning with the National Trade Facilitation Action Plan (2020-23).

Long-Term Benefits and Economic Resilience

The SMILE program is expected to:

  • Create millions of job opportunities across warehousing, supply chain management, and trade logistics.
  • Reduce logistics costs by up to 5%, improving India’s cost competitiveness in global trade.
  • Increase private sector participation in infrastructure development, further strengthening the economy.
  • Enhance India’s status as a global manufacturing and supply chain hub, boosting GDP growth.

The Narendra Modi government has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to transforming India’s logistics ecosystem, and the SMILE program is a testament to that vision. By integrating infrastructure development, digital innovation, and sustainable practices, India is set to emerge as a global leader in logistics efficiency. With initiatives like PM Gati Shakti, NLP, and SMILE, the government is not only improving trade logistics but also fostering economic growth and global competitiveness for Viksit Bharat 2047.

By addressing implementation challenges and improving the scope and reach of MSP, the Modi government can create a more equitable system that aligns with the vision of Viksit Bharat.

India’s agricultural sector forms the backbone of its economy, providing livelihoods to millions and ensuring food security for a vast population. At the heart of agricultural policy is the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system, which guarantees farmers a fair price for their produce, insulating them from market fluctuations. This article delves into the comprehensive scope of MSP, the crops it covers, and its role in fostering a progressive agricultural ecosystem.

What is MSP?

MSP is the price at which the government procures crops from farmers, ensuring they are not forced to sell below their cost of production during periods of low market prices. The MSP is announced for 22 mandated crops and is determined based on recommendations from the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP), along with input from state governments and relevant central ministries.

Crops Covered Under MSP

The MSP system encompasses a wide variety of crops, grouped into Kharif, Rabi, and other categories:

  1. Kharif Crops

    • Cereals: Paddy (Common), Jowar, Bajra, Maize, Ragi
    • Pulses: Tur (Arhar), Moong, Urad
    • Oilseeds: Groundnut, Sunflower, Soybean (Yellow), Sesamum, Nigerseed
  2. Rabi Crops

    • Cereals: Wheat, Barley
    • Pulses: Gram, Masur (Lentil)
    • Oilseeds: Rapeseed & Mustard, Safflower
  3. Commercial Crops

    • Cotton (Medium Staple)
    • Jute
    • Copra (Milling)

Recent MSP Trends: Growth Analysis (2020-2025)

The government has consistently increased MSP over the years to align with rising production costs. Below are the key insights from the last five years:

  • Paddy (Common): MSP increased from ₹1,868 per quintal in 2020-21 to ₹2,300 in 2024-25, a rise of ₹432.
  • Jowar: MSP rose by ₹751, from ₹2,620 to ₹3,371 during the same period.
  • Ragi: Saw a significant increase of ₹995, from ₹3,295 to ₹4,290.
  • Moong: MSP climbed by ₹1,486, from ₹7,196 to ₹8,682.
  • Soybean (Yellow): The MSP increased by ₹1,012, from ₹3,880 to ₹4,892.
  • Cotton (Medium Staple): A notable rise of ₹1,606, from ₹5,515 to ₹7,121.

The government has also ensured significant increases for Rabi crops:

  • Wheat: MSP grew by ₹450, from ₹1,975 in 2021-22 to ₹2,425 in 2025-26.
  • Rapeseed & Mustard: A rise of ₹1,300, from ₹4,650 to ₹5,950.
  • Masur (Lentil): Witnessed a substantial hike of ₹1,600, from ₹5,100 to ₹6,700.

Procurement Mechanisms Under MSP

  1. Cereals and Coarse Grains
The Food Corporation of India (FCI) and designated state agencies procure cereals and coarse grains to stabilize prices and maintain buffer stocks. The procurement estimates are finalized in consultation with state governments based on production and marketable surplus.

  2. Pulses, Oilseeds, and Copra
Procurement is conducted under the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA) when market prices fall below MSP. Agencies like NAFED and NCCF handle procurement, restricted to 25% of All India production.

  3. Cotton and Jute
Cotton is procured by the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), while jute procurement is managed by the Jute Corporation of India (JCI). Unlike other crops, there is no maximum quantity limit for cotton and jute procurement.

Key Challenges in MSP Implementation

Despite its numerous benefits, MSP faces several implementation challenges:

  1. Limited Awareness: Many farmers, especially smallholders, remain unaware of MSP or lack access to procurement centers.
  2. Regional Disparities: Procurement is concentrated in select states, disadvantaging farmers in non-procurement areas.
  3. Infrastructure Gaps: Lack of adequate storage and transport facilities often leads to inefficiencies in procurement.

Strengthening MSP

To maximize the benefits of MSP, the government should focus on:

  • Expanding Awareness Campaigns: Ensuring farmers across all regions are informed about MSP and its processes.
  • Strengthening Infrastructure: Building more storage units and procurement centers in underserved areas.
  • Enhancing Technology Integration: Leveraging digital tools for transparent procurement, real-time price updates, and farmer registration.
  • Boosting Private Sector Participation: Encouraging private players to support procurement and storage under regulatory guidelines.

MSP remains a cornerstone of India’s agricultural policy, ensuring financial security for farmers and fostering sustainable agricultural growth. By addressing implementation challenges and improving the scope and reach of MSP, the government can create a more equitable system that aligns with the vision of Viksit Bharat. A robust MSP framework not only uplifts farmers but also strengthens India’s journey towards self-reliance and prosperity in agriculture.

Soil fertility is the backbone of agricultural productivity, directly influencing crop yield, farmer income, and national food security. Recognizing the crucial role of soil health in sustainable farming, the Modi government has implemented Soil Fertility Mapping under the Soil Health & Fertility Scheme. This initiative, spearheaded by the Soil & Land Use Survey of India (SLUSI) under the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, has revolutionized farming practices across India by leveraging geo-spatial technologies, remote sensing, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Understanding Soil Fertility Mapping

Soil Fertility Mapping is a scientific approach to analyzing soil composition and nutrient levels across different regions. By generating district and village-wise digital soil fertility maps, the government provides farmers with crucial data on pH levels, organic carbon content, essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, and micro-nutrients such as zinc, copper, iron, manganese, and boron. This information, made available through the Soil Health Card (SHC), enables farmers to make informed decisions on fertilizer use, ensuring optimal soil health and higher productivity.

The Role of Soil Health Cards (SHC)

The Soil Health Card Scheme, launched in 2015, is a landmark initiative that assists farmers in judicious use of chemical fertilizers by promoting Integrated Nutrient Management (INM). The scheme encourages the use of organic manures, bio-fertilizers, and secondary/micro-nutrients to enhance soil fertility. Farmers receive personalized recommendations on nutrient application based on soil testing, helping them avoid overuse or deficiency of essential nutrients.

Technological Advancements in Soil Fertility Mapping

The Modi government has integrated cutting-edge technology into soil health assessment. Geospatial techniques, remote sensing, and AI-based tools are being extensively used in soil fertility mapping.

  • Each SHC soil sampling point is geo-coded using GPS, ensuring precise location-based tracking.
  • Unique QR Codes are assigned to each soil sample, allowing seamless data retention and analysis.
  • Farmers can access their SHCs online by entering their registered mobile numbers, ensuring transparency and accessibility.

The labour force participation rate (LFPR) among women from minority communities in India has witnessed a steady increase over the past three years, reflecting the impact of targeted government initiatives and socio-economic transformations. According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the LFPR for females among major religious groups during 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24 has shown a significant upward trend.

Labour Force Participation Trends

The survey estimates indicate a noticeable rise in the participation of women in the workforce across all major religious communities:

Religious Group PLFS 2021-22 PLFS 2022-23 PLFS 2023-24
Hinduism 26.1 30.5 33.3
Islam 15.0 14.2 21.4
Christianity 34.2 35.1 38.3
Sikhism 19.8 23.5 26.7
All 24.8 27.8 31.7

These figures highlight a substantial increase in the LFPR of women, particularly among minority communities. The participation of Muslim women in the workforce has surged from 14.2% in 2022-23 to 21.4% in 2023-24, signaling a positive shift in economic inclusion and empowerment.

Government Interventions and Their Impact

A key driver behind this improvement is the Pradhan Mantri Virasat Ka Samvardhan (PM VIKAS), a flagship initiative of the government aimed at uplifting the six notified minority communities through skill development, educational support, and targeted economic empowerment programs. The scheme integrates five previously independent schemes:

  1. Seekho aur Kamao: Launched in 2014-15, this scheme focuses on enhancing the employability of minority youth (14-45 years) by equipping them with modern and traditional skills. Notably, 57.64% of the total beneficiaries trained under this scheme were women, amounting to over 2.69 lakh individuals.
  2. Upgrading the Skills and Training in Traditional Arts Crafts for Development (USTTAD): Introduced in 2015, this scheme aimed at preserving and promoting traditional arts and crafts while enhancing the capacities of master craftsmen and artisans. A remarkable 89.10% of the total beneficiaries under this initiative were women (19,255 individuals).
  3. Nai Manzil: Operational between 2014-15 and 2020-21, this scheme provided formal education and skill development to minority youth who lacked formal schooling credentials. Over 54,233 women benefitted from this initiative, constituting 54.94% of total beneficiaries.
  4. Nai Roshni and Hamari Dharohar: These schemes focused on women’s leadership development and cultural preservation among minority communities.

Policy Recommendations for Sustained Growth

Despite the progress achieved, there is room for further policy refinements to ensure continued improvement in the labour force participation of women from minority communities:

  1. Expansion of Skill Development Initiatives: Strengthening skill-training programs with greater emphasis on emerging sectors such as digital technology, e-commerce, and financial services can enhance employment opportunities for minority women.
  2. Financial Inclusion Measures: Linking skill development with financial literacy programs, microfinance access, and entrepreneurship support can empower women economically and promote self-employment.
  3. Social Security and Workplace Safety: The introduction of targeted social security schemes such as maternity benefits, workplace safety norms, and insurance for self-employed women can enhance workforce retention and participation.
  4. Encouraging Formalization: Incentivizing businesses to integrate informal sector workers into the formal economy by offering tax benefits, wage subsidies, and flexible work arrangements can help bridge employment gaps.
  5. Real-Time Data Utilization: Leveraging data analytics to assess employment trends, migration patterns, and skill demands can help policymakers design more effective interventions tailored to specific minority communities.
  6. Community-Based Engagement: Encouraging local self-help groups (SHGs), NGOs, and religious institutions to promote vocational training and job placements can lead to greater community acceptance and participation.

The increasing labour force participation of women from minority communities is a testament to the efficacy of targeted government policies and socio-economic transformations. However, sustained efforts are required to further bridge gender disparities and economic exclusion. Strengthening skill development, financial inclusion, and social security frameworks will ensure that minority women not only enter the workforce but thrive in it, contributing to India’s vision of an inclusive and developed economy.

“PM-SYM will assure monthly pension for the enrolled unorganized sector workers during their old age. It is for the first time since independence that such a scheme is envisaged for the crores of workers engaged in the informal sector.”

PM Narendra Modi

Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PM-SYM) is a voluntary and contributory pension scheme launched by the Government of India to provide social security to unorganised workers. This scheme ensures a minimum monthly pension of ₹3,000 after the age of 60 for workers who belong to the unorganised sector and have a monthly income of up to ₹15,000. The scheme is a tribute to the workers in the unorganised sectors who contribute around 50 per cent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Unorganised workers are mostly engaged as home-based workers, street vendors, mid-day meal workers, head loaders, brick kiln workers, cobblers, rag pickers, domestic workers, washermen, rickshaw pullers, landless laborers, own account workers, agricultural workers, construction workers, beedi workers, handloom workers, leather workers, audio-visual workers or workers in similar other occupations. As per the e-Shram portal, there are over 30.51 crore unorganised workers registered as on 31 December 2024.

PM-SYM was introduced in the Interim Budget 2019. The scheme is administered by the Ministry of Labour and Employment in collaboration with Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and Common Service Centres e-Governance Services India Limited (CSC SPV) for seamless implementation. LIC is the Pension Fund Manager and is responsible for pension payouts. The scheme is a part of the government’s broader social security initiatives and aligns with the vision of universal pension coverage for workers in the unorganised sector.

Key Features of PM-SYM

The Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan scheme provides numerous benefits, ensuring financial security in old age for unorganised sector workers. It assures a minimum pension of ₹3,000 per month after 60 years of age. The Government of India matches the worker’s contribution on a 1:1 basis. The scheme is voluntary and contributory, allowing workers to contribute based on their affordability and requirement. In the event of the beneficiary’s demise, the spouse receives 50% of the pension amount as a family pension. Family pension is applicable only to the spouse. Participants can exit the scheme under specified conditions, and eligible workers can register at Common Service Centres (CSCs) or through the Maandhan portal. The scheme is administered by LIC, ensuring financial stability and credibility.

Eligibility Criteria

To enroll in PM-SYM, individuals must be between 18 to 40 years of age and have a monthly income of ₹15,000 or less. The scheme covers workers engaged in professions such as street vendors, rag pickers, rickshaw pullers, construction workers, daily wage labourers, agricultural workers, beedi workers, domestic workers, weavers, artisans, fishermen, and leather workers. Individuals who are covered under the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), or National Pension Scheme (NPS), as well as those who are income taxpayers or receiving benefits from any other government pension scheme, are not eligible. Required documents for enrolment include an Aadhaar Card, savings bank account or Jan Dhan account details with IFSC, and a mobile number. A detailed list of professions covered under this scheme is available at https://labour.gov.in/list-professions-occupations-covered.

Contribution Structure

The contribution amount varies based on the age at the time of enrolment. For example, an 18-year-old worker contributes ₹55 per month, with the government contributing an equal amount. A 20-year-old contributes ₹65 per month, while a 25-year-old contributes ₹80 per month. Those enrolling at 30 years of age contribute ₹105 per month, whereas 35-year-olds contribute ₹150 per month. The maximum contribution of ₹200 per month applies to individuals enrolling at 40 years of age. Upon reaching 60 years, beneficiaries start receiving a fixed pension of ₹3,000 per month for their lifetime.

Enrolment Process

Enrolment in PM-SYM is facilitated through Common Service Centres (CSCs) across India. Workers need to visit a CSC with Aadhaar and a savings bank account. Biometric authentication using Aadhaar is required, followed by filling out an online registration form. The first subscription is to be paid in cash, after which an auto-debit facility is set up from the bank account. Upon successful enrolment, the worker receives a PM-SYM card. Alternatively, eligible workers can enroll through the Maandhan portal at https://maandhan.in/. Labour offices of state and central governments, LIC branch offices, ESIC/EPFO offices act as facilitation centres providing full information to unorganised workers. Additionally, a customer care number (1800 2676 888) is available 24×7 for assistance.

Implementation and Current Status

The government has taken several steps to ensure that the benefits of the scheme reach unorganised sector workers. Regular review meetings with States and UTs, discussions with state Common Services Centre (CSC) heads, and the launch of new features such as Voluntary Exit, Revival Module, Claim Status, and Account Statement have been instrumental. The revival period for dormant accounts has been extended from one year to three years. PM-SYM and e-Shram have been integrated for seamless implementation. SMS campaigns have been launched to create awareness, and communications with Chief Secretaries of States and UTs have been undertaken to boost enrolment. The ‘Donate-a-Pension’ module has been introduced to encourage employers to pay the premium of their staff under PM-SYM and increase enrolment. The government has also collaborated with the Department of Financial Services, Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority, and National Institute of Public Finance and Policy to expand the outreach of the scheme.

Exit and Withdrawal Provisions

Recognizing the erratic nature of employment in the unorganised sector, the scheme offers flexible exit provisions. If a worker exits before 10 years, the contributed amount is refunded with savings bank interest. If the exit occurs after 10 years but before 60 years, the beneficiary receives their share of contribution along with accumulated interest as earned by the fund or at the savings bank interest rate, whichever is higher. In case of death before 60 years or permanent disability caused by an accident, the spouse can either continue the scheme or withdraw the contributed amount with interest. After the subscriber’s death post-60 years, the spouse receives 50% of the pension as a family pension. Upon the death of both subscriber and spouse, the entire corpus is credited back to the fund. If a subscriber defaults on payments, they can regularize contributions by clearing outstanding dues along with penalty charges, if applicable.

PM-SYM is a landmark initiative providing financial security to millions of unorganised workers. By ensuring a monthly pension of ₹3,000, it helps workers lead a dignified life post-retirement. With a significant number of enrolments and ongoing promotional efforts, PM-SYM aims to provide universal pension coverage, strengthening India’s social security framework.

Investments in biogas and biomethanation plants are increasing, with the potential to produce 1.5 billion cubic meters of biogas annually.

Global Best Practices and India’s Roadmap

Countries like the Netherlands, Sweden, and Japan have successfully implemented circular economy models, focusing on closed-loop production systems and waste recovery. India can adopt similar strategies by:

Strengthening public-private partnerships (PPP) to fund waste management projects.

Developing a national circular economy strategy with clear targets and regulatory frameworks.

Encouraging R&D in sustainable materials and waste-to-resource technologies.

Enhancing consumer awareness and participation through education and policy incentives.

India’s ambitious circular economy initiatives reflect a paradigm shift in production and consumption patterns. By integrating sustainability into economic planning, India can achieve a triple-bottom-line impact—economic growth, environmental protection, and social equity. The journey towards a circular economy not only supports the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 but also cements India’s leadership in global sustainability efforts. Policymakers, industry leaders, and citizens must collectively work towards embedding circular principles in every sector, ensuring a cleaner, more resource-efficient future for generations to come.

India’s security framework is facing unprecedented challenges that demand a multi-dimensional approach. With the evolving nature of warfare—cyber threats, hybrid warfare, space-based challenges, and transnational organized crime—India must adapt its security apparatus to remain ahead of adversaries. Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, during the MHA-DRDO Collaboration Conference-Cum-Exhibition on March 4, 2025, emphasized the need for integrating advanced technologies into security operations and disaster management to ensure a strong and resilient India.

Emerging Security Threats and India’s Preparedness

Modern warfare is no longer confined to conventional battlefields. India’s security concerns have evolved beyond terrorism, separatist movements, and left-wing extremism to include cyberattacks, misinformation campaigns, and space-based espionage. According to CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team), cyberattacks on critical infrastructure in India surged by 18% in 2024, demonstrating the urgency for a robust cybersecurity framework. Furthermore, hybrid warfare, which blends conventional and unconventional tactics, requires India to develop an agile and integrated response mechanism.

Role of DRDO and Technological Advancements

DRDO has been instrumental in developing cutting-edge security solutions, from small arms and bulletproof jackets to advanced surveillance systems. The recent transfer of technology for the ASMI 9x19mm Machine Pistol to Lokesh Machinery Tool under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative signifies a step towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Over 100 DRDO-developed products have been inducted into internal security agencies and disaster relief operations, reinforcing the critical role of indigenization in strengthening national security.

Integration of Technology in Disaster Management

The increasing frequency of natural disasters, such as cyclones, avalanches, and earthquakes, highlights the necessity of leveraging technology for disaster response. India witnessed over 300 major natural disasters in the past decade, affecting millions of lives. Technologies like thermal imaging cameras, drone-based detection systems, and victim locating devices have proven crucial in minimizing casualties. For instance, during the recent avalanche in Mana, Uttarakhand, advanced rescue tools such as rotary rescue saws and drone surveillance significantly reduced response time, saving lives.

Public Awareness and Civil Society Involvement

While security agencies and technology developers play a vital role, public awareness is equally crucial. Raksha Mantri stressed that every citizen should be equipped with basic crisis response knowledge, ensuring a collective approach to disaster preparedness. Initiatives such as community disaster management training and digital awareness campaigns can enhance public resilience against emergencies.

Regional Security Challenges and Tailored Solutions

Security threats in India are diverse and region-specific. The challenges faced in the Northeast due to insurgencies differ from those in Naxal-affected areas or border regions. Urban security concerns, such as cybercrimes and organized crime networks, require distinct strategies compared to rural security issues. Focused conferences and research on region-specific threats will enable the formulation of tailored policies and solutions.

India’s national security must be viewed through a holistic lens, integrating technological advancements, policy reforms, and public participation. The collaboration between MHA and DRDO marks a significant step towards enhancing internal security and disaster preparedness. As threats evolve, India’s security framework must remain adaptable, leveraging innovation and strategic foresight to safeguard national interests. A unified and technologically empowered security apparatus will be the cornerstone of a resilient and self-reliant India.

Key Findings: Growing Financial Awareness Among Women

The report reveals a 42% year-over-year increase in women borrowers, indicating a surge in financial literacy and credit awareness. As of December 2024, 27 million women were actively monitoring their credit scores, reflecting a shift towards financial independence and responsible borrowing.

The Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) of NITI Aayog played a crucial role in compiling this study, underscoring the importance of gender-inclusive financial growth.

Government’s Commitment to Women Entrepreneurs

During the launch event, Shri B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, emphasized the need for accessible finance to support women entrepreneurs. He stated, “Access to finance is a fundamental enabler for women’s entrepreneurship. The Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) is dedicated to fostering an inclusive ecosystem that promotes financial literacy, credit accessibility, mentorship, and market linkages. However, ensuring equitable financial access requires a collective effort from financial institutions and policymakers alike.”

To further this initiative, the Financing Women Collaborative (FWC) has been constituted under WEP to engage financial sector stakeholders in promoting gender-responsive financial products.

Women Entrepreneurship as a Catalyst for Economic Growth

Anna Roy, Principal Economic Advisor at NITI Aayog and Mission Director of WEP, highlighted the transformative role of women entrepreneurs in India’s economic expansion. She noted that encouraging women-led businesses could generate employment for 150 to 170 million people, thereby accelerating equitable economic growth and increasing female workforce participation.

Regional Trends and Emerging Financial Behavior

The report also presents regional insights into women’s credit monitoring and borrowing patterns:

  • Women’s share in the total self-monitoring credit base increased from 17.89% in 2023 to 19.43% in 2024.

The post Policy Imperatives for the Mutual Fund Industry in India appeared first on VisionViksitBharat.

]]>
The mutual fund industry has played a significant role in India’s economic expansion, encouraging financial literacy and fostering investment habits among retail investors. Domestic investors are now the primary force driving India’s markets, overshadowing the role of Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs). With assets under management (AUM) approaching Rs 70 lakh crore and projected to reach Rs 100 lakh crore, the industry must embrace its responsibility to protect small investors and maintain market stability.

The Role of Domestic Investors in Market Stability

Post-COVID-19, domestic investors, particularly through systematic investment plans (SIPs), have bridged the gap left by FIIs. According to AMFI data, retail investors now account for nearly 60% of the total AUM, with SIP contributions exceeding Rs 18,000 crore per month as of January 2025. This shift highlights the growing reliance on local capital, which enhances market resilience against external shocks.

However, market volatility remains a concern, driven by large fund inflows, fear of missing out (FOMO), and speculative trading. The mutual fund industry must implement risk management strategies that educate investors about market cycles and long-term investing principles. Policymakers should collaborate with AMFI to establish stricter disclosure norms, ensuring transparency in fund allocation.

Mitigating Volatility and Protecting Small Investors

Market unpredictability has led to financial crises in the past, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to safeguard retail investors. Key recommendations include:

  1. Investor Education and Financial Literacy: AMFI should lead campaigns promoting financial literacy to prevent impulsive investment decisions based on misinformation. Collaboration with educational institutions and digital platforms can enhance awareness.
  2. Stronger Regulatory Oversight: SEBI and AMFI should reinforce guidelines on algorithmic trading and high-frequency trading, which often amplify volatility. Stricter disclosure requirements for large institutional trades can provide more predictability.
  3. Risk Management Mechanisms: Mutual funds should implement strategies such as dynamic asset allocation and counter-cyclical investment approaches to stabilize market fluctuations.
  4. Encouraging Long-Term Investment: The industry must promote long-term wealth creation over short-term speculative gains. Tax incentives for long-term investors can further encourage stability.

Global Context: The Condition of the USA and China

The global economic landscape is undergoing significant shifts, with major economies like the United States and China facing unique challenges. The U.S. financial markets have seen increased volatility due to concerns over inflation, rising interest rates, and geopolitical tensions, impacting investor sentiment. Meanwhile, China is grappling with slowing economic growth, a struggling real estate sector, and regulatory crackdowns on major industries, leading to a decline in foreign investments. These factors have led to capital outflows from emerging markets, including India, reinforcing the importance of domestic investment to ensure market stability and sustained growth.

The Future of Mutual Funds in India

With private capital expenditure rebounding and government investments increasing, India’s financial markets are poised for sustained growth. The mutual fund industry’s role as a wealth creator necessitates a balanced approach that ensures profitability while maintaining a fair and organized market structure.

The industry must work towards achieving deeper financial inclusion by expanding mutual fund penetration in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Digital onboarding, simplified investment processes, and innovative products catering to diverse investor profiles can accelerate this progress.

As India’s economy evolves, domestic investors will remain the backbone of the financial markets. The mutual fund industry must uphold its duty to protect small investors, ensure market stability, and enhance financial inclusion. By prioritizing investor education, enforcing robust regulatory measures, and fostering a culture of long-term investment, the industry can drive India’s economic growth for the next two decades, shaping a resilient and self-reliant financial ecosystem.

The Indian government is making significant strides in optimizing coal transportation through the Rail-Sea-Rail (RSR) mode. With coal movement via RSR nearly doubling from 28 million tonnes (MT) in FY22 to 54 MT in FY24, this initiative is set to transform India’s logistics landscape, ensuring efficient coal evacuation while promoting sustainability.

The Need for Rail-Sea-Rail (RSR) Mode in Coal Transportation

India’s growing energy demands necessitate a seamless, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable coal transportation system. Traditionally, the all-rail route (ARR) has been the primary mode of coal transportation, leading to network congestion, higher logistical costs, and increased carbon emissions. The RSR mode, integrating rail and coastal shipping, provides a viable alternative by decongesting the railway network and leveraging maritime infrastructure for bulk cargo movement.

Key Benefits of the RSR Mode

1. Cost Competitiveness and Efficiency

The latest decision by Indian Railways to allow telescopic benefits in freight rates for coal transported via RSR mode is a game-changer. Previously, coal transported in two legs (mine to unloading port and loading port to power plant) was charged separately for each leg, increasing costs. The telescopic benefit consolidates freight charges, significantly reducing transportation costs and making RSR a more competitive option for coal evacuation.

2. Decongesting Railways and Enhancing Capacity

The ARR mode often faces congestion due to high coal transportation demand, causing delays and inefficiencies in freight movement. The increased use of RSR alleviates this pressure by diverting a significant portion of coal transportation through coastal routes, allowing Indian Railways to optimize its network and improve overall freight services.

3. Environmental Sustainability

The RSR model contributes to India’s sustainability goals by reducing the carbon footprint of coal transportation. Coastal shipping is inherently more fuel-efficient than rail transport, leading to lower greenhouse gas emissions. The shift towards RSR aligns with India’s commitment to sustainable development and cleaner logistics solutions.

4. Strengthening Maritime Infrastructure and Coastal Economy

With the increased adoption of RSR mode, India’s coastal ports and shipping infrastructure will receive a significant boost. The expansion of port facilities, investment in coastal shipping, and integration of rail connectivity with maritime logistics will generate employment, enhance regional economies, and support India’s vision of becoming a global logistics hub.

Impact on India’s Economic Growth

The adoption of RSR mode for coal transportation has far-reaching economic implications:

Boosting Energy Security: Ensuring uninterrupted coal supply to power plants enhances energy security and supports industrial growth.

Improving Logistics Competitiveness: Reduced transportation costs will contribute to overall cost efficiencies in power generation and allied industries.

Enhancing Port Utilization: Increased coal movement via ports will drive investments in coastal shipping infrastructure, fostering maritime trade.

Supporting Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat: A robust logistics ecosystem strengthens India’s manufacturing sector by ensuring reliable and cost-effective energy supply.

The government’s focus on Rail-Sea-Rail (RSR) mode as an alternative coal transportation strategy is a significant step towards a resilient, efficient, and sustainable logistics framework. With supportive policies such as telescopic freight benefits and increased coal movement through coastal shipping, India is poised to enhance its energy security, reduce logistics costs, and propel economic growth. Strengthening the RSR mode will not only support India’s coal sector but also pave the way for a more integrated and future-ready multimodal logistics network, essential for achieving the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent address in Assam highlighted a crucial aspect of his governance—cultural revival alongside socio-economic upliftment. His speech, delivered in a vibrant atmosphere filled with the spirit of the state’s traditional ‘Jhumur’ dance, was not just a celebration of Assam’s rich heritage but a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to the development of the Northeast. The event also underscored the administration’s focus on empowering indigenous communities, bolstering infrastructure, and integrating the region into the national mainstream.

Cultural Recognition and Preservation

The government’s decision to grant Assamese the status of a classical language and the inclusion of Charaideo Moidams in UNESCO’s World Heritage list are significant milestones in recognizing Assam’s cultural and historical contributions. These efforts align with a broader strategy to revive and promote indigenous cultures that have long been overlooked. PM Modi’s assertion that he serves as a ‘brand ambassador’ for Northeast India reflects the strategic intent to position the region as a key part of India’s cultural and economic narrative on the global stage.

Furthermore, the commemoration of the 400th birth anniversary of Ahom General Lachit Borphukan on a national scale was a significant step in reviving historical narratives that celebrate regional heroes. The establishment of museums dedicated to tribal heritage under the ‘Tribal Pride Day’ initiative further showcases the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting the contributions of indigenous communities.

Empowerment of Tea Tribe Communities

One of the key highlights of PM Modi’s speech was the empowerment of Assam’s tea tribe communities. Assam is synonymous with its globally renowned tea industry, which employs a vast number of laborers, many of whom belong to the tea tribes. The government has undertaken several measures to improve their socio-economic conditions, including the provision of ₹15,000 in financial assistance to pregnant women, ensuring they do not face income loss during maternity. Additionally, Assam Tea Corporation workers are now receiving bonuses, providing much-needed financial security.

Assam’s inclusion in India’s Act East Policy is further integrating the region into global trade networks, particularly with Southeast Asian countries.

Another notable development is the push towards enhancing Assam’s biodiversity and ecotourism potential. PM Modi’s stay at Kaziranga National Park symbolized the government’s commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism, encouraging greater global recognition of Assam’s natural wealth.

Political and Social Inclusion

One of the most significant aspects of PM Modi’s approach to Assam and the Northeast is his emphasis on political and social integration. Unlike past governments, which often viewed the Northeast as a peripheral concern, the BJP-led administration has taken proactive steps to ensure that the region is central to India’s growth trajectory. The repeal of outdated laws, strengthening of regional autonomy, and the inclusion of local voices in policymaking have all contributed to a more inclusive governance model.

Moreover, the reservation of 3% seats for tea tribe youths in OBC quotas and financial assistance of ₹25,000 for self-employment initiatives mark an important step in mainstreaming these communities into the broader socio-economic framework of India.

The Vision for a Developed Assam and Northeast

PM Modi’s speech was not just a ceremonial address but a reflection of a well-structured development vision for Assam and the Northeast. By intertwining cultural recognition with economic progress, the government is fostering an environment where traditional heritage and modern development coexist harmoniously. The Northeast, long viewed as a distant frontier, is now emerging as a vibrant hub of economic and cultural resurgence.

As these initiatives take root, Assam and the broader Northeast region are poised to become integral players in India’s growth story, standing as testaments to the success of inclusive and development-driven governance. The vision outlined by PM Modi is not merely about regional upliftment but a larger national goal of building a more connected, prosperous, and culturally enriched India.

The AYUSH sector has grown exponentially, with the manufacturing value of AYUSH-based products skyrocketing from $3 billion in 2014 to $24 billion today. This eightfold increase is a testament to India’s leadership in holistic healthcare. The 2017 National Health Policy introduced integrative healthcare, blending Unani, Ayurveda, and allopathy, creating a robust medical ecosystem that emphasizes both prevention and cure.

Unani Medicine’s Role in Global Healthcare

The resurgence of Unani medicine, particularly post-Covid, highlights India’s strategic investment in traditional knowledge. During the pandemic, global demand for Unani and Ayurvedic formulations surged, reinforcing the credibility of these systems in immunity-building and disease management. Unani medicine, with its roots in ancient Persian, Greek, and Indian traditions, has now evolved into a research-driven field, making India a hub for Unani medical studies and academic tourism.

Innovation and Technology: Blending Tradition with Science

India is pioneering a new era where traditional knowledge is seamlessly integrated with cutting-edge technology. Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Genomics are revolutionizing diagnostics and treatment methodologies in Unani medicine. AI-driven predictive models are enhancing patient care, while gene therapy innovations are paving the way for personalized medicine. The development of India’s first DNA-based Covid-19 vaccine underscores the nation’s ability to combine ancient wisdom with scientific breakthroughs.

India: The Global Hub for Holistic Medical Education

India’s academic institutions are now attracting students and researchers from across the globe, positioning the country as a leader in holistic medicine education. With postgraduate courses in Unani medicine available in Hyderabad and Srinagar, India is driving academic tourism and fostering international collaborations in research and healthcare.

Policy Roadmap for the Future

To sustain and expand this momentum, India must adopt a multi-pronged approach:

Strengthening Research and Development: Establishing global research centers dedicated to evidence-based studies on Unani and other traditional medicines.

Regulatory Reforms: Standardizing AYUSH medicine practices in alignment with global benchmarks to facilitate wider acceptance.

Expanding Digital Integration: Leveraging AI and blockchain for transparent, efficient, and scalable healthcare solutions.

Boosting Medical and Academic Tourism: Creating world-class infrastructure for traditional medicine education and holistic wellness retreats.

India’s leadership in integrative healthcare is not just a revival of ancient traditions but a forward-looking approach to global health challenges. A truly ‘Viksit Bharat’ must be built on the foundation of a healthy India, where ancient wisdom meets modern science to create innovative, sustainable, and universally accessible healthcare solutions. By continuing its commitment to holistic medicine, India is poised to redefine the future of global healthcare.
