Youth and Women Empowerment
Youth and women form the backbone of India’s socio-economic framework. With a median age of 28 years, India is home to one of the youngest populations globally, presenting a unique demographic advantage. Simultaneously, women constitute nearly 48% of the population, underscoring the importance of their active participation in every sphere of development. Empowering these two critical segments is imperative to achieve the vision of a developed India by 2047.
Current Scenario
Youth Empowerment
India’s youth contribute significantly to the workforce but face challenges like unemployment, lack of skills, and limited entrepreneurial opportunities. While government initiatives like Skill India and Startup India have made progress, many young individuals still lack access to quality education and vocational training aligned with emerging industry demands. Moreover, issues like mental health, substance abuse, and social exclusion affect their potential.
Women Empowerment
Women’s participation in the workforce remains low at approximately 20%, despite their growing enrollment in higher education. Gender biases, safety concerns, unequal pay, and lack of access to leadership roles continue to hinder their progress. While schemes such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Mahila E-Haat have shown promise, achieving gender equity remains a significant challenge.
Requirements for Improvement
1. Skilling and Employability
Both youth and women need targeted skill development programs to prepare them for industries like technology, healthcare, and renewable energy. Promoting STEM education for women and offering vocational training for youth in rural and urban areas can bridge the skill gap.
2. Entrepreneurship and Start-Up Ecosystem
Fostering an entrepreneurial culture through mentorship, access to credit, and incubation centers is essential. Women entrepreneurs, in particular, should receive support in the form of subsidies, financial literacy programs, and networking platforms.
3. Policy and Legislative Support
Strengthening policies that ensure equal pay, maternity benefits, and workplace safety for women is crucial. For youth, labor laws should facilitate internships, apprenticeships, and flexible work options to integrate them into the workforce.
4. Inclusion and Representation
Promoting equal representation of women in politics, corporate leadership, and decision-making roles can set a strong foundation for inclusivity. Simultaneously, youth councils at local and national levels can ensure their voices shape policies and initiatives.
5. Social and Cultural Transformation
Awareness campaigns addressing societal biases, safety concerns, and mental health issues are necessary to create an enabling environment. Programs focusing on gender sensitization and youth leadership development can transform attitudes and mindsets.
Vision for 2047
By 2047, India must harness the full potential of its youth and women through comprehensive policies and programs. Empowered youth, equipped with modern skills and innovative thinking, will drive economic growth and technological advancements. Similarly, empowered women will not only enhance productivity but also contribute to building a more equitable, inclusive, and progressive society.
To achieve this, Vision Viksit Bharat must focus on holistic development strategies that integrate education, employment, entrepreneurship, and equity, ensuring that youth and women are at the forefront of India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation.
